The Second Friendly Cultural Exchange Program for Cooperative Institutions

1.       Background

In order to strengthen the contacts and mutual understanding, Huaqiao University provides a cultural program for our cooperative institutions. All students from our cooperative institutions who are interested in Chinese history, culture, business, and social science are welcomed to participate in this program for free. The program is a series of lectures which will be delivered in English through a live synchronous instruction online. Multiple topics like China’s high-speed rail, Cross-border E-commerce, Chinese learning styles and Chinese legend, etc. are included.

2.       Brief Introduction of Huaqiao University

Huaqiao University (HQU) is a comprehensive university, which is located in Quanzhou and Xiamen,Fujian Province, China.Sticking to the vision of internationalization, Huaqiao University has enrolled students from over 50 countries and regions. As one of the universities with the largest number of international students in mainland China, HQU has contributed to a multicultural campus atmosphere and a comparative strength in Chinese language and culture education and training in the mainland.

3.       Program information

1)      Schedule: November 6,7,13,14,20,21,27,28. Every Weekend in Nov. at 20:00 PM Beijing Time .

      The curriculum includes EIGHT lectures, each lecture lasts for 90 minutes.

2)      Teaching language: English.

5)      Requirements:

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate.

Students must

  be at least 15 years old unless otherwise noted.

  have access to a computer with camera and microphone;

  have access to a stable internet connection.

7)      Evaluation & Certificate

Student learning process will be measured during the program based on attendance and active participation. Students who attend 80% of the live lectures will be awarded a completion certificate. Certificates will be emailed to students at the conclusion of the program.

8)      Program Valuation

At the conclusion of the program, students will complete anonymous surveys on each aspect of the program.

Brief   Introduction

On China’s   High-speed Rail (HSR) Past, present and future: the evolution

Exploration   of Chinese learning methods

Based on the   theory of cultures of learning generated by a renowned linguists and   cross-cultural studies experts Lixian Jin and Marin Cortazzithis lecture   will explore how Chinese people perceive education and learning, the style   and the rhetoric features of Chinese academic writing. This lecture will be   useful to the future international students who plan to study in China.

Originated   from a perspective of cultures of learning by Lixian Jin and Marin Cortazzi,   wellknown intercultural specialists, the lecture aims to explore the learning   methods and attitudes towards education from Chinese cultural habits. It will   show international students Chinese writing and rehtorical features in a   Chinese classic from a historical narration perspective.

The   Introduction to Chinese Classics--Life wisdom in Confucianism

This lecture   will introduce you chapters in the Analects of Confucius, which helps you to   understand the basic connotation and development of Confucianism. We will   explore the core values of Chinese traditional culture from   "benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and faith". And   jointly discuss the wisdom of life in Confucianism and its practical   significance.

Chinese   Science Fiction-The Legend of Imagination and the Vision of Future

 

This   lecture mainly focuses on the introduction to the history and current   development of Chinese science fiction, tracing the root of fantasy and   imagination in traditional Chinese literature and presenting the development   of Chinese science fiction literature in the past century. This lecture also   introduces contemporary representative Chinese science fiction works and   their significance, and analyzes the unique narrative perspective of it.

1.   From the ancient Book of Mountains and Seas to The Three Body Problem: an   overview of Fantasy Themes in Chinese science fictions

2.   "Yanshi’s Creation of Man" vs. "Frankenstein": A case   study on the theme of fantasy and reason in Chinese science fictions.

3.   From "Western Learning to the East" to the "Blossoming   Development" of modern Chinese science fiction: a glimpse of the   “science-fictional realism”

4.   “A community with a shared future for mankind” in the perspective of science   fiction: A case study on the Chinese Sci-Fi film The Wandering Earth.

China’s   Marine Ecological Civilization Policies and Practices

This   lecture aims to introduce the Chinese experience of blue economy development through   the integrated coastal management practices in different stages focusing on   the comprehensive bay cleanup and development. The lecture will also begin   with the update of ocean and blue economy development in the context of   global sustainable development agenda and ocean and coastal management as   well as the marine ecological civilization policies in China.

This lecture   analyzes the development of E-Business/Commerce in China in the last 20   years. It identifies the opportunities within this industry and shed lights   on how are we be part of it.
