Bali, the venue of the G20 summit 2022 from November 15 to 16, came under the spotlight with the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping. In a series on Bali, China Media Group paid special attention to the Chinese language and Chinese culture craze on the island, and highlighted Chinese language classes at the local Jembatan Budaya School, where 6 alumni of Huaqiao University (HQU) are working as Chinese language teachers. Across the island there are nearly 20 HQUers engaged in Chinese language education.

In addition to training Chinese teachers for overseas Chinese schools, HQU has also sent its Chinese Spark teams for six consecutive years to spread Chinese culture in Indonesia’s Tarakan, Central and East Java, Kabupaten Mempawah, Medan, Surabaya, Pekan, Riau, Yogyakarta, and Bali. They offer courses in local schools, teaching Chinese language, calligraphy, painting, paper cutting, Kung Fu, Chinese national character, and scientific and technological achievements in China. The Chinese Spark has recruited around 100 Indonesian students majoring in Chinese language education and covered more than 5,000 school children in the country. Thanks to the project, an increasing number of Indonesian students have developed an understanding of China and a passion for the Chinese language and culture.

In 2018, the HQU Chinese Spark Team promoted Chinese culture at SMAN 1 Singaraja High School in Bali, Indonesia.

In 2021, the HQU Chinese Spark Team taught Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting to Indonesian students online.
