Introduction to College of Humanities

The College of Humanities, formerly known as the Department of Chinese Language and Literature when Huaqiao University was founded in 1960, is one of the oldest colleges in the school. Many prestigious teachers such as Qian Liqun, Xie Mian, Li Mingbin, She Shusen, Sun Shaozhen, Jiang Shaoyu, Guo Rui and Yang Chunshi once taught in the College. Professor Lin Dao, the famous linguist of Peking University, was the former dean of the department. The College has trained more than 7,000 graduates in the past 60 years, who have made outstanding contributions to economic and social development all over the world. The College now offers two undergraduate programs (Chinese Language and Literature and Applied Linguistics) and one postgraduate program (Chinese Language and Literature). The College also runs five research centers, including Minnan Culture Research Center, Chinese Traditional Culture Research Center, Research Center for Overseas Chinese Literature and Taiwan-Hong Kong-Macao Literature, Research Center for Chinese Language and Characters and Research Center for Literature by Overseas Chinese. There are 820 undergraduate and graduate students in the College, including 143 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions and other countries. The overseas students account for about 17.5% of the total students, making the College rank among the highest in similar colleges and universities in China.

 

There are 39 full-time teachers in the College, including 24 professors and associate professors. Among them, 36 teachers have obtained doctorate degrees. More than ten teachers have studied in famous universities in the US, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and other countries, accounting for more than 30% of the faculty. Among the teachers, there is one expert who enjoys the special allowance of the State Council. Five teachers are awarded outstanding talents by the country, the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Education and Fujian Province. More than 20 are selected as outstanding high-level talents by Xiamen and Quanzhou governments. Eight teachers have won excellent awards in teaching competitions organized by Huaqiao University.

 

Our undergraduate program in Chinese Language and Literature was approved by the Ministry of Education as a national characteristic program in 2008, and the program in Chinese Language and Literature was awarded the first-class undergraduate program by the Ministry of Education in 2019. These honors are evidence of the high-level education of the College. Courses including History of Modern Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese Literature and College Chinese have been rated as national first-class courses, first-class courses in Fujian Province, and excellent online courses in Fujian Province. Our teachers have recently obtained more than ten education and teaching reform projects in Fujian Province. They have won Fujian Province Education and Teaching Achievement Awards and edited more than ten textbooks. Moreover, our young teachers have recently achieved excellent results in various teaching competitions.

 

Our Chinese Language and Literature programs have been recognized by the Ministry of Education as characteristic programs. They have been selected as key disciplines in Fujian Province, key construction disciplines in Fujian Province and the “Double First-Class” construction plan in Fujian Province. The College has obtained more than 20 social science projects sponsored by the country and the Ministry of Education, more than 40 provincial and ministerial projects and more than 40 municipal and school-level projects. Our teachers have won about 20 outstanding scientific research achievement awards in Fujian Province, Xiamen and Quanzhou. They have published more than 20 academic works and more than 200 papers in various authoritative and core journals.

 

The College has organized and hosted many large-scale academic conferences, such as the Symposium on the Overseas Chinese Literature and the Civilization Exchanges between China and Foreign Countries: Theoretical Innovation and Text Interpretation, the Symposium on the History of Chinese Thought and Literature, the 2nd International Symposium on Overseas Chinese Dialects, the International Conference of Prof. Jao Tsung-I and Sinology, the 2nd Symposium on the Comparative Study of Modern Chinese Language and Ying-Chen Chen Literature Week & International Symposium. The College has attached great importance to the cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign universities and institutions and launched more than 100 academic lectures, such as “Sinology Lectures”.

 

The College strives to cultivate students’ moral and well-rounded qualities. It provides enriching and colorful activities, such as Chinese culture festival, drama club, original literature contest, Chinese character culture contest and Chinese classics reading. These activities are listed as excellent activities of Huaqiao University. The educational base of “Chinese Culture and Inheritance” is selected as the demonstration base of Chinese culture education in Fujian Province. The College also implements the tutor system for overseas students, carries out growth plans for overseas students and edits the traditional culture books for overseas students to spread the excellent Chinese culture. Great efforts have been put into innovative practice and school-enterprise cooperation. The College has built more than ten practice bases, carried out a series of practical activities and produced various outstanding works. The College highlights overseas exchanges and social services, providing students with various opportunities to study in overseas universities and organizing various social work and volunteer teaching activities.

 

Our students have won more than 400 awards in various national, provincial, municipal and school competitions. More than 300 students have won awards and honorary titles in these competitions.

 

The College has established undergraduate exchange programs with more than ten universities such as Fu Jen Catholic University and Tamkang University in Taiwan. It has also established long-term cooperation and exchange relations with universities such as the University of Hong Kong. Students can choose to study in overseas universities for short-term exchanges.

★ Chinese Language and Literature (national characteristic program, national first-class program, 145 credits): the program aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with systematic knowledge of Chinese language and literature, profound humanistic understanding, and strong writing skills. Students will have the ability to contribute to the inheritance of excellent Chinese culture, economic and social development at home and abroad and friendly exchanges between China and foreign countries.

 

Core Modules:

Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Foreign Literature, Literary Theory, Writing, Overseas Chinese Literature, History of Chinese Thought, History of Chinese Literary Criticism, Western Literary Theory, Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese, Introduction to Linguistics, etc.

 

★ Applied Linguistics (national characteristic program, special program, 145 credits): the program aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents who have a solid foundation in language and writing and a strong ability to use language, write and communicate in cross-cultural contexts. Students can undertake work in Chinese application and communication, international cultural exchange, language teaching and research and so forth.
