Introduction of College of Civil Engineering

In 1964, the College of Civil Engineering (CCE) was established in Quanzhou Campus. It moved to Xiamen Campus in 2006. The CCE began to enroll master students in 1982, Ph.D. students in 2003. The Civil Engineering is the first-class discipline of Fujian Province. According to the 2019 Civil Engineering ranking in China by ARWU, the Civil Engineering program of HQU ranked 38 th  within 570 universities with Civil Engineering program.

 

 


The CCE consists of four departments, i.e. Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Construction Management, Department of Municipal Engineering, and Department of Geotechnical Engineering. CCE offers bachelor degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Water and drainage Engineering, and Geotechnical Engineering. The Civil Engineering major was awarded the Engineering Education Certification in 1997, which is the 13th certified major in China. Construction Management and Water and drainage Engineering majors also received the National Engineering Education Certification.

Currently, CCE has a total of 2,001 students, including 273 postgraduates and 120 overseas students. More than 7,000 students graduated from CCE, and the overseas alumni are mainly located in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as countries along the Ancient Marine Silk Road, serving as ambassadors of friendship to promote Sino-foreign exchanges and cooperation. Currently, the college has 89 full-time faculty members including 27 full professors and 34 associate professors. In CCE, 2 professors receive State Council Special Allowance, 4 professors are selected by the Ministry of Education in the New Century Excellent Talents Support Plan. Three foreign professors work at CCE of HQU as National High-level Foreign Experts.



The Laboratory of CCE has a total area of 13,000 square meters, equipped with world-class experimental facilities for the study in Structural Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Fire Engineering. The CCE has more than 10 provincial-level research platforms, including Key Laboratory of Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention, Key Laboratory of Intelligent Infrastructure and Monitoring, and Tunnel and Urban Underground Space Engineering Research Center of Fujian Province. In the past 5 years, CCE has initiated more than 147 research projects including 35 research projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Representative Faculty 

Department of Civil Engineering

Zixiong Guo, Professor, State Council Special Government Allowance Expert, New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education. His research mainly focuses on seismic/resilient structure, composite/hybrid structure and modern stone structure.

Professor Guo received his Ph.D. from Tongji University in 2000. Currently, he is the Dean of the College of Civil Engineering, director of Key Laboratory for Structure Engineering and Disaster Prevention of Fujian Province, leader of Science and Technology Innovation Team in Fujian Province. Professor Guo has been the PI of 6 National level research Projects. Professor Guo published more than 220 research papers, participated in the compilation of 6 national code or standards, and is granted 102 patents. Professor Guo has won the Second Class National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Class Science and Technology Progress Award of Shanghai, the Second Class Science and Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province. He won the First Class Prize of Excellent Teaching Achievements of Fujian Province due to his teaching and research achievements, and the titles of Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker and Outstanding Teacher of Fujian Province.

Yuli Dong, Professor, Minjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor and Leading talents in Science and Technology Innovation of Fujian Province. His research mainly focuses on the basic theory of fire resistance of engineering structure and concrete structure.

Professor Dong received his Ph.D. from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1992. Now he is the group leader of Structural Fire Resistance Research, and director of Comprehensive Fire Resistance Technology Research Center of Xiamen. Professor Dong is also the vice chairman of Building Fire Prevention Technology Committee of China Architecture Society. He has been the PI of 7 research projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China. Professor Dong won the First Class Award of the National Federation of Commerce in Science and Technology Progress, the Second Class Science and Technology Progress Award of Fujian Province and the Second Class Science and Technology Progress Award of Shangdong Province. Professor Dong has published two academic monographs and more than 80 academic papers. He also has been granted more than 20 invention patents and won the title of Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker in Fujian Province.

Bin Xu, Professor, New Century Excellent Talents Ministry of Education, Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor. His research mainly focuses on structure condition monitoring and nonlinear behavior identification, NDT for concrete-steel composite structure, multi-scale simulation and novel structure system.

Professor Xu received his Ph.D. from Ibaraki University in 2001. He had been a Curtis Visiting Professor at Purdue University and a Gledden senior visiting fellow at the University of Western Australia. Professor Xu has published more than 200 papers in journals and international conferences including over 100 SCI/EI cited papers, granted 11 national invention patents, and has been the editorial board member of 8 monographs and editor of an international conference proceedings. He has been PI or Co-PI of 6 research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 international cooperation project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 8 provincial-level projects of the ministry of education. Professor Xu won one Second Class Technological Invention Award of Fujian Province and two Best Papers in international conferences. Professor Xu served as editor-in-chief, executive editor and editorial board of several international journals, and delivered keynote speeches and invited reports at international conferences.

Sijing Huo, Professor, New Century Excellent Talents Ministry of Education, Tongjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, His research mainly focuses on structural impact resistance, continuous collapse resistance and structural fire resistance.

Professor Huo received his Ph.D. from Fuzhou University in 2005. Now he is a committee member of the Steel-Concrete Composite Structure Branch of China Steel Structure Association and committee member of Structural Fire Resistance, Seismic and Disaster Prevention Branch of Architectural Society of China. He has secured over 4 National Natural Science Foundation Projects and 6 provincial level science and technology projects. He has published more than 130 academic papers in international journals such as ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE Journal of Composite for Construction, ACI Materials Journal and Engineering Structures.

 

Xuanneng Gao, Professor

Professor Gao received his Ph.D. from Hunan University in 1998. His research mainly focuses on steel structure design theory and methods, engineering structure explosion-proof, fire resistance and disaster control research.

Kemin Zhou, Professor

Professor Zhou received his Ph.D. from Tianjin University in 2001. His research mainly focuses on structural topology optimization and its application in civil, mechanical, aviation and other fields, and 3D printing technology.

Shengcai Li, Professor

Professor Li received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2003. His research mainly focuses on the seismic performance of new structure.

Zhixing Zeng, Professor

Professor Zeng received his Ph.D. from Tianjin University in 2003. His research mainly focuses on teaching and research in the field of civil engineering concrete structure.

Lincong Chen, Professor

Professor Chen received his Ph.D. from Zhejiang University in 2009. His research mainly focuses on seismic engineering structures, fiber reinforced concrete filled steel tube structures, intelligent structures and materials, and random vibration.

Hongsong Hu, Professor

Professor Hu has received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2014. His research mainly focuses on steel concrete composite structure and high-rise building structure.

Yuye Xu, Professor

Professor Xu received his Ph.D. from South China University of Technology in 2007. His research mainly focuses on the behavior of concrete structure, fire resistant for engineering structures, and structural reinforcement.

Yang Liu, Professor

Professor Liu received his Ph.D. from Huaqiao University in 2009. His research mainly focuses on earthquake resistance and disaster prevention of engineering structure and steel-concrete composite structures.

Deping Fang, Professor

Professor Fang received his Ph.D. from Huaqiao University in 2007. His research mainly focuses on structural engineering, engineering mechanics and prestressed concrete structures.

 

Qunxian Huang, Professor

Professor Huang received his Ph.D. from Huaqiao University in 2011. His research mainly focuses on earthquake resistance and disaster prevention, RC structure, structural performance evaluation and analysis.

Yanghang Shi, Professor 

Professor Shi received his Ph.D. from Tianjin University in 2002. His research mainly focused on earthquake resistance, structural durability, structure diagnosis and disaste mitigation, structure strengthening.

Handong Yan, Professor

Professor Yan received his Ph.D. from Southeast University in 2001. His research mainly focuses on high strength and high-performance concrete, inorganic cementitious materials, and comprehensive utilization of solid waste.

 


Department of Construction Management

Yunbo Zhang, Professor, State Council Government Special Allowance Expert. His research mainly focuses on civil engineering technology and engineering management.

Professor Zhang received his Ph.D. from Tianjin University in 2004. Now he served as the Assistant to the President of Huaqiao University, Director of the Institute of Construction and Real Estate of Huaqiao University. He is executive director of Architectural Economics branch of Architectural Society of China, member of Project management and Engineering Cost Professional Guidance Sub-committee of the Ministry of Education. Professor Zhang has published more than 30 academic papers in influential journals such as Civil Engineering Journal and Construction Technology. He has been PI and Co-PI of more than 10 research projects including that supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the natural science foundation of Fujian Province, and the National High-tech 863 Sub-Project. He has been awarded 4 provincial level science and technology progress awards. Professor Zhang also won the title of Distinguished Teacher of Fujian Province.

Xuan Qin, Professor. Her research mainly focuses on the sustainable construction and risk management of large complex projects, game theory and information economics, risk and risk management, green building and green construction.

Professor Qin received her Ph.D. from Tianjin University in 2005. Now she is Associate Dean of College of Civil Engineering in charge of undergraduate teaching and international exchange. Professor Qin has been a visiting scholar of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI), University College London (UCL) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). She has published one monograph, and more than 60 academic papers. Professor Qin has been the PI of two national research funds, four provincial level projects, and three municipal projects. She won the First Class Prize of Excellent Teaching Achievements of Fujian Province due to her teaching and research achievements.

 

Chen Wang, Professor, High-level Talents from Overseas of Fujian Province and Tongjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor. His research mainly focuses on project management, intelligent construction and artificial intelligence research.

Professor Wang received his Ph.D. from University of Malaya in 2010. Now he is the Director of Department of Construction Management, Head of Intelligence and Automation in Construction Fujian Province Higher-educational Engineering Research Centre. He is also a member of RICS, a member of IEEE, and a senior member of IETI. In 2018, he became Research Advisor and senior scholar of The Nan Yang Academy of Sciences (NASS) Singapore. Professor Wang has been engaged in teaching and research in the University of Malaya (ranked 87th in the world) for many years. Professor Wang has secured over more than 10 overseas research projects, published more than 100 SCI and SSCI papers and published 6 English monographs and 2 Chinese monographs.

 

Yihui Huang, Professor

Professor Huang received his Ph.D. from Huaqiao University in 2008. His research mainly focuses on construction management and structural strengthening.

Qing Ye, Professor

Professor Ye received her Ph.D. from Huaqiao University in 2011. Her research mainly focuses on construction technology economy, price evaluation and lean construction.


Department of Municipal Engineering

Baoling Yuan, Professor, New Century Excellent Talents Ministry of Education, Leading Talents of Fujian Province and Outstanding Youth of Xiamen. Her research mainly focuses on water pollution control and environmental remediation.

Professor Yuan received her Ph.D. from Research Center of ecological environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. Now she is the Associate Dean of College of Civil Engineering, director of Municipal Water Environment Ecological Planning and Restoration Engineering Research Center of Xiamen, director of Municipal and Environmental Engineering Research Institute. She is also a member of the Teaching Guidance Sub-committee of the Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering Major of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Water Environment and Water Ecology Sub-committee of the China Urban Science Research Association. She has been PI of a number of national level research projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, over 80 provincial and ministerial key science and technology fund projects and local service projects. Professor Yuan has published more than 150 academic papers, is granted more than 10 invention patents and published 3 Chinese books.

Department of Geotechnical Engineering

Shihai Chen, Professor, Quanzhou City High-level Entrepreneurship and Innovation Talents. His research mainly focuses on tunnel and underground engineering, rock dynamics, geotechnical disaster prevention and mitigation.

Professor Chen received his Ph.D. from PLA University of Science and Technology in 2004. Now he is the chair of the Department of Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, director of Tunnel and Urban Underground Space Engineering Technology Research Center of Xiamen. Professor Chen also hold the position as the committee member of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the committee of China Blasting Industry Association, vice secretary-general of Blasting Committee of China Coal Society. He has been the PI of 4 National Natural Science Foundation Projects and 6 other provincial level science and technology projects, and won 1 first class, 2 second class and 5 third class provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. He has published more than 80 academic papers in academic journals and 4 monographs. He has also been granted 5 invention patents.

 

Jin Yu, Professor,

Professor Yu received his Ph.D. from Nanjing Water Conservancy Research Institute in 2008. His research mainly focuses on geotechnical dynamics, geotechnical hydraulics and tunnel mechanics.

Qipeng Cai, Professor

Professor Cai received his Ph.D. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2011. His research mainly focuses on the underground structure-fault-soil interaction, tunneling and excavation.

Undergraduate Level Majors

Civil engineering (4 year, Bachelor in Engineering)

Founded in 1964, the civil engineering major has been selected as a national distinct major and the First-class Distinct major in Fujian Province. In 1997, it was awarded the Engineering Education Certification of Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development (the 13th in China), and the certification has been renewed for five times successfully.

Construction management (4 year, Bachelor in Engineering)

Founded in 1993, the major has been selected as the distinct major of Fujian Province and the First-class distinct major in Fujian Province. In 2005, it was awarded the Engineering Education Certification of Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development, and has been renewed for three times continuously.

Water and drainage Engineering (4 year, Bachelor in Engineering)

Founded in 2003, the program was selected as the first-class distinct major in Fujian Province and was awarded the Engineering Education Certification of Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development in 2016.

Research

 

Major Research Fields

Structural earthquake resistance and comprehensive disaster prevention

The research topics in this field include earthquake resistance, fire resistance, explosion resistance and comprehensive disaster prevention for engineering structures. The structural earthquake resistance and fire resistance laboratories are equipped with high performance test facilities.

 

Novel structure systems and their design theory

Multi-scale and multi-physics simulation and experimental studies on concrete-steel composite structures, prestressed concrete-steel hybrid wind tower structures and modern stone structure, structural optimization, novel wave propagation based defect detection approaches for concrete-filled steel tubes and computation approaches including spectral element method (SEM) are carried out.

 

Geotechnical and tunnel engineering

Based on the Fujian Tunnel and Underground Space Engineering Technology Research Center, studies on the safety control of blasting vibration response in underground engineering construction, the construction technology of complex overlapping tunnel group and the treatment of residual soil and soft soil foundation in South Fujian are carried out.

 

Municipal Engineering

The major research activities include drinking water safety assurance, waste water resource utilization and sponge city construction, and ecological planning, ecological restoration and intelligent management.

 

Intelligent construction and management of Civil Engineering

The sustainable development of construction industry such as construction engineering informatization, industrialization, green building and energy conservation, intelligent construction, risk management and so on are carried out.

Research Facilities

Key Laboratory of Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention of Fujian Province

This key laboratory has been equipped with high-performance leading test facilities. The landmark equipment includes MTS three-way six degree-of-freedom (DOF) seismic simulation shaking table (5m × 5m), MTS high-performance hybrid simulation experimental system with 13 groups of actuators, MTS fast loading system with a loading speed of 1000mm/s), electro-hydraulic servo fatigue test system with a loading capacity of 200t, large scale vertical and horizontal fire test furnace with loading and complex boundary condition simulator. The laboratory focuses on innovative research and technological consulting services in the fields of sustainable structures, engineering structure earthquake resistance and disaster reduction, fire resistance and geotechnical engineering disaster prevention.

Key Laboratory of Intelligent Infrastructure and Monitoring of Fujian Province 

Meeting the needs for the safety and sustainability of large-scale and complex infrastructure in Fujian Province and southeast coastal area under complex and harsh natural environment, the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Infrastructure and Monitoring of Fujian Province focuses on the theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on advanced sensing and monitoring technologies for large-scale and complex infrastructure, novel nondestructive testing technologies for hybrid and composite structures, structural damage and nonlinear behavior identification approaches for post-event condition evaluation for engineering structures subjected to strong dynamic loadings including earthquakes, life-cycle damage prognosis and intelligent maintenance approaches. The key lab has been equipped with imported high-performance dynamic data acquisition and modal analyzing system, distributed optical fiber sensing system, impedance analyzing system, structural defect detection system with piezoelectric materials and other related experimental study devices for the study of intelligent infrastructures.

Tunnel and Urban Underground Space Engineering Technology Research Center of Fujian Province

The center was supported by the Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology in December 2015 with the aim of developing key technologies and enhancing the application of scientific and technological achievements in tunnel and underground space engineering in practice. The current research focus includes the tunnel and urban underground space engineering construction technology, the impact and control of underground space engineering operations on the surrounding environment, and the hazard mitigation for the underground space structure under earthquake, explosion and fire. The major test facilities in this research center include a 1500×1500×2000mm underground engineering model test device, rock dynamic disturbance loading triaxial test machine, GDSTAS geotechnical static and dynamic triaxial tester, tunnel cross section laser detector, Swedish Mala geological radar, blasting vibration acquisition system, TGS- 360Pro tunnel 3D geological prediction system, EPS seismograph and other advanced equipment.

Fujian Province Higher-educational Engineering Research Center of Intelligence and Automation in Construction

The Fujian Province Higher-educational Engineering Research Center of Intelligence and Automation in Construction focuses on the research and application in artificial intelligence and Bionics in construction engineering automation technology. The center is also interested in R&D works in unconventional environment (such as mountains, high humidity, high temperature, high cold, underwater, etc.), and intelligent disaster prevention and mitigation technology. The center aims to establish the mechanism of industry-university research cooperation and collaborative innovation, and to promote the transformation and upgrading of construction production mode in the province.

Engineering and Technical Research Centre for Fire Resistance and Disaster Prevention Research of Xiamen

The Research Centre has a leading fire resistance test platform for large structures. The horizontal fire test furnace has a maximal internal size of 6.0 m (width)×4.5 m (thick) ×3.0 m (high), and the vertical furnace has an internal size of 4.2 m (width)×2.5 m (thick) ×3.0 m (high). The 4-channel synchronous or asynchronous loading system has a maximum displacement of 500 mm and a loading capacity of 5,000 kN. Two types of pre-defined ISO-834 standards fire curves and the Carbon-hydrogen fire curve were designed in the control system. In addition, user-defined elevated temperature curves were also supported by the control system of the fire resistance test platform. Moreover, a 16-channel acoustic emission monitoring and analysis system was also equipped for the platform. The furnaces can be used for fire performance test of various beams, slabs, joints, columns, and frames etc., and it also can be used to test the performance of various fire products, such as fire-proof door, fire-proof window, and fire-proof wall etc. The developed fire resistance test device and technology has been patented and most related research funding has been adopted in fire resistance design and disaster prevention of urban underground space.

Urban Water Environment Ecological Planning and Restoration Engineering Technology Research Center of Xiamen

The research center focuses on the research of urban water environment ecological planning, urban water environment restoration theory and engineering technology, and urban water environment planning and restoration intelligent management. The objective of this center is to accelerate the transformation and application of engineering technology achievements, to promote sponge city construction planning, urban black and smelly water treatment and intelligent city stewards, to improve the urban ecological environment and to promote the construction of urban ecological civilization through the interdisciplinary cooperation of ecological planning, restoration technology and intelligent management of urban water environment.
