The College of Physical Education at Huaqiao University, founded in 2006 and preceded by the Sport Department of Huaqiao University, first recruited home and international students in 2008. The College’s master’s course in Sport Industry Management was approved in 2013, and it started to enroll domestic and international students in 2014. We currently have a faculty team of high quality, well-structured composition and sustainably organized academic expertise, alongside well-equipped facilities. Specifically, the College has a faculty of 50, including 4 professors, 16 associate professors, 7 doctorates and 1 P.h.D student, among whom more than 10 members are international and national referees. We boast our dedication, commitment, academic expertise and a focus on moral development in sports performance, as well as our sophisticated teaching experience, high teaching and training criteria and great research strength in the sports sphere.

The College conducts teaching activities in strict accordance with the University’s mission of “serving overseas Chinese, disseminating Chinese culture”. We have also established an educational ethos of “integrating Chinese and foreign education, cultivating intellectual and moral virtues” in tandem with promoting a campus spirit of “inclusion as the fundamental, valuing collective harmony and individual differences”. Based on these beliefs, we have confirmed our devotion to the fully-fledged development of sport research, national fitness campaigns and sports competition by focusing on teaching reform and prioritizing the advance of various disciplines. After a seven-year effort, the College has achieved a broad-based academic framework with basketball and badminton being our major emphasis, dragon boat and lion and dragon dance being our highlight programs, and leisure sport programs, such as outdoor sports, being our specialist fields. In the meantime, the College actively pushes forward the teaching quality improvement program and currently has 1 flagship province-level course. We have one province-level teaching team, with one teacher awarded as “Fujian Province Excellent Teacher”. The College’s teaching reform project, Construction and Practice of “Combination of Competition and Teaching” Basketball Talent Training System at Huaqiao University, was awarded the 7^th Fujian Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Outstanding Prize. The University also won the honorary title of “National Excellent Higher Education Institution Committed to Regulations on College Physical Education” for 3 consecutive years, in addition to the title of “National Advanced Body in Mass Sports Activities”.

The College has published over 100 academic papers in the past 5 years, with more than 30 of which being published in core journals, such as China Sport Science. We have launched over 20 new research projects including 2 national philosophy and social science programs, one social science project planned by The Ministry of Education and two sports social Science projects initiated by the General Administration of Sport of China. Furthermore, there have been 13 social science projects of Fujian Province, 1 natural science foundation of Fujian Province and 5 humanities and social science research projects of the Education Department of Fujian Province, while the number of university-level teaching research projects and funding projects for youth teachers has surpassed 10. The Experimental Center for Sports Science and Health also earned the award of Fujian University Teaching Experiment Demonstration Center during the 12^th Five-Year Plan Period.

At the heart of our key specialities lie sports competition and traditional ethnic sports. Here we pride ourselves on our University’s men’s basketball team for bagging the CUBA championship nine times altogether and four times in a row. The team also reaped one champion and two runner-ups in CBA-CUBA Youth Basketball Competition. The team was crowned with the laurel of the Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) in July 2008. The team participated in the 2^nd World University 3-on-3 Basketball Championship on behalf of Chinese university teams and ranked top 8 and secured 1^st place in the individual shooting game in September 2014. The achievement of the cooperation between the University’s badminton team and 2 professional teams, the “Bayi” team and Xiamen Sports team, is as remarkable, as our team won gold and silver medals from the 8^th to 14^th National University Badminton Championship.The badminton team also fulfilled our dream of “going global” by winning the team champion representing Chinese universities in the 10^th World University Badminton Championships in Braga, Portugal in May 2008. The University’s men’s football team won 6^th place in the National Finals of the China University Campus Football League in June 2015. The female dragon boat team of the University won 4^th place in the 4^th World University Dragon Boat Championship. The University’s dragon boat team landed 8^th place in the 1^st Race of China Dragon Boat Open in 2014. The University’s dragon dance team won the champion of the prescribed routine and the runner-up of the optional routine in the 6^th National University Students Dragon and Lion Dance Championship. Our track and field and swimming athletes won gold and silver medals in a multitude of university competitions at national and provincial levels, winning unanimous praise from professionals. The full bloom of our sports competition has won the University honour and increased both of our domestic and overseas reputation and impact.

The College is the Chinese talent (dragon boat) training base of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and China Overseas Exchange Association. It is the first training base for overseas Chinese dragon boat athletes set up by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office nationwide. The School successfully held 2 “Cultural China - The Chinese Artistic and Cultural Talent (Dragon-boat Racing) Competition for Global Chinese” in 2011 and 2013 respectively, followed by the world Overseas Chinese Basketball Competition in 2014, which aroused great response at home and abroad. In addition, we send abroad 3-5 batches of teachers every year for activities such as “Chinese Grand Paradise”, which provides opportunities for overseas Chinese to understand and learn Chinese sports culture.

Apart from endeavoring to sustain our competitive edges in sports competition and traditional ethnic sports, the College actively engaged in the hosting of sports tournaments and events, for example, CUBA Final 4, CUBA Final 16, CUBA Winter Camp and Overseas Chinese Cultural Association Chinese Talent (Dragon Boat) Training Sessions, amongst others. With the approval from the International University Sports Federation, we now have the long-term qualification of organizing the finals of the World University 3-on-3 Basketball League, which has constantly helped to widen our domestic and overseas influence.

The College will continue to live up to our vision of “Harmony, Struggle, Innovation” and “Higher, Faster, Stronger”, firmly advocate the guiding instruction of “Health First” and strive to reach new landmarks in the pursuit of sports education at higher education at Huaqiao University based on the notion of “creating disciplinary characteristics. Efforts will be made continuously to improve teaching quality, increase research capacity, promote a competitive brand, foster collective wellbeing and innovate developmental processes”.
