Brief Introduction to the School:

The master's program in Quantitative Economics completed the student admissions for the first time in 1995. The School of Economics and Management was established by integrating Business Management, Tourism, Social Science and Information Management departments in June 2000. The School of Economics and Management was divided into three schools: Business School, the School of Business Management and College of Tourism in October 2004, while the Business School changed its name to the School of Economics and Finance in September 2009. The first dean of the School was Professor Hu Ridong, a leading role in philosophy and social sciences of the National “Ten Thousand Talents Program”. The current dean is Professor Guo Kesha, winner of the “Sun Yefang Economic Science Award” for two times and a candidate of the National "Millions of Talents Project”. The honorary dean is Professor Wu Jiapei, a well-renowned economist and the founder of Quantitative Economics and Information Economics in China.

 

There are 2431 students and 91 faculty members in the School. In this strong faculty team, there are 74 full-time teachers (including 14 professors and 28 associate professors) and 58 teachers with doctoral degrees (including 12 doctoral supervisors). Among the teachers of Applied Economics discipline, there are two winners of the “Sun Yefang Economic Science Award”, two candidates of the National “Millions of Talents Project” and two experts enjoying special allowance provided by the State Council of PRC. Additionally, we have two candidates of the “New Century Excellent Talents Support Program” initiated by the Ministry of Education. Moreover, we have two specially invited professors from the Fujian Minjiang Scholars, two lecture professors, one well-known college teacher of Fujian Province, four candidates of the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" initiated by universities of Fujian province and six outstanding young scientific research talents from Fujian's universities. The school has presided over 30 national projects in the past five years, including major national projects, national key projects and emergency management projects initiated by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Faculty members of the school have published more than 200 papers in CSSCI, SSCI and SCI journals involving Social Sciences in China, Economic Research, Management World and Qiushi. Dozens of papers have been reprinted by Xinhua Wenzhai and Replicated Journals Database of Renmin University of China, of which won seven provincial or ministerial awards covering the Humanities and Social Sciences Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education and Outstanding Social Science Achievement Award of Fujian province.

 

Disciplinary Advantages:

The School currently possesses the first-class doctoral subject of Applied Economics, Fujian Provincial "Double First-Class" construction discipline of Applied Economics (A-class core discipline), the national key discipline of Quantitative Economics, Fujian Provincial characteristic discipline of Applied Economics and provincial key discipline and a postdoctoral scientific research station of Applied Economics. It also offers five master's programs in Quantitative Economics, Finance, Regional Economics, International Trade and Industrial Economics. Moreover, the School consists of four departments covering International Economics and Trade, Finance, Economics and E-commerce, of which the International Economics and Trade as well as Finance and E-commerce are first-class majors at the provincial level. The undergraduate program of Finance has been selected as the construction major of the University’s Excellent Talent Training Program. The program of E-commerce, a characteristic major of the service industry in Fujian Province, has passed IEET Engineering and Science and Technology Education certification. The school has established the Excellent Base of Humanities and Social Science Research of Universities in Fujian Province, including the Huaqiao University Quantitative Economics Research Center, Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, E-commerce Research Center, Institute for International Economics, Institute of China's Economic Reform & Development, Academy of Macroeconomic Research and China Industrial Economics Research Center. In addition, the University and School have respectively set up an economic management experiment center and a fintech laboratory.

 

Our school has achieved remarkable results in teaching. Nine courses have been rated as excellent courses or first-class courses in Fujian Province; four teaching achievements have won the first and second prizes of Provincial Teaching Achievements; a series of textbooks have been awarded the National Planning Teaching Materials Project Approval and Provincial Excellent Teaching Materials. The faculty of International Finance, undergraduate teaching and research team of Finance, and master's supervisor team of Finance have been selected as Fujian Provincial Excellent Faculty, Fujian Provincial Exemplary Faculty and Fujian Provincial Supervisor Group Project Approval. One hundred courses have been evaluated as high-quality courses, while eight courses have been evaluated as demonstration ones since 2016.

 

Achievements of Talent Cultivation:

The School of Economics and Finance adheres to multiple measures to carry out talent training with the core principle of moral education. The school has promoted the Elite Growth Plan by exploring cultivation models such as the class - school - family linkage”, “diversified learning and integration of domestic and international resources. Efforts have also been made to enhance the career planning instruction, employment guidance and entrepreneurship education, implement the “Tangram” Employment Project and promote three projects to enhance students’ professional ability, comprehensive competence and core competitiveness. As a result, the School greatly promoted the high-quality development of students, demonstrating a remarkable ability in talent cultivation.

 

The School cultivates a large number of students who are employed in a wide range of industries including banks and securities companies in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Quanzhou and other economically developed areas, provinces and cities.

 

Adhering to the integration of theory and practice and improvement of students’ versatility, the School have cultivated a large number of student who won the championship in a diverse range of professional competitions, including the China National College Student “Innovation, Originality and Entrepreneurship” Challenge, National College Student Financial Elite Challenge and International Trade Operation & Management Sand Table Competition over the years. Our students won the second prize in the national final of the 16th Challenge Cup Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition for College Students in 2019. The student representatives won the first and second prizes in the 17th National Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling in 2020.

 

International Exchange and Cooperation:

The School of Economics and Finance actively promotes the combination of its educational philosophy and academic paradigm with the international community and strengthens the directive function of internationalization indicators. Teachers are selected and sent abroad for further study by taking advantage of inter-school exchanges and China Scholarship Council. The school encourages qualified teachers to receive the professional guidance provided by well-renowned foreign teachers and professors, track the latest trends in the international academic research field and broaden their horizons to promote the development of the school’s academic teaching and research. In particular, faculty members are encouraged to engage in scientific research under international academic norms, study issues of common interest to the international academic community and publish articles in core international periodicals. Moreover, the School actively organizes various high-level international forums and academic seminars to fully play the role of overseas distinguished professors and lecture professors. The 4th Huaqiao University Cross-Strait Relations Forum (Cross-Strait Relations Academic Seminar) was held on December 22, 2018. On July 6-7, 2019, the 2019 International Conference on High-Quality Development of China's Economy in the New Era was successfully held at Huaqiao University.

 

Over 30 foreign scholars have visited our school for academic exchange and cooperation in the past three years, while distinguished overseas scholars conducted academic exchange and cooperation in our school each year. Besides that, our school has actively expanded sino-foreign cooperative education programs and adopted flexible cooperation and exchange models, greatly increasing the proportion of overseas students exchanging in reputable international universities. Shifting the one-way, short-term and temporary international academic exchange to a diversified, long-term and stable one, many of our students went to Northern Arizona University, George Mason University, University of Essex and so forth for further study and exchange. Furthermore, dozens of students enjoyed the online study projects provided by prestigious universities such as the University of Cambridge, Waseda University, North Carolina State University, University of Toronto and the National University of Singapore.
