Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University is the institution of Huaqiao University that teaches Chinese as a foreign language. It is one of the first educational institutions qualified by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China to enroll foreign students. It is one of the first Chinese language education bases approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office Of The State Council, one of the key colleges supported by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation to provide Chinese education to adjacent countries and one of the most long-established examination centers for Chinese Proficiency Test in Fujian province. Our main mission is to spread Chinese language and culture among overseas Chinese and foreigners, conduct Chinese language training and promote cultural exchanges between China and other countries.
Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University is located in the famous Jimei school village of Xiamen city, covering an area of more than 60,000 square meters. Adjacent to the sea and mountains, It boasts beautiful scenery and convenient transportation. 20 Chinese and Western buildings with “Jia Geng style” are arranged neatly and elegantly on the campus, presenting a very distinctive architectural landscape.
The Chinese Language and Culture College was formerly known as Jimei Overseas Chinese Students Cram School which was founded in 1953 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, with the approval from The State Council. It was established for overseas Chinese students and foreign students who came to China to study Chinese language and culture. To cater to the rapid development of overseas Chinese education, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office Of The State Council decided to incorporate Jimei Overseas Chinese School into Huaqiao University in 1997. Merging with the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language of Huaqiao University, the Chinese Language and Culture College was finally established in the same year.
We have adhered to the purpose of “serving overseas Chinese and transmitting Chinese culture” and carried forward Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s spirit of rigorous school administration since the establishment of the College. We have made remarkable achievements. The College has formed a multi-level and multi-form education system with Chinese language education as its main direction. It has cultivated more than 60,000 graduates from more than 40 countries and regions in the world and contributed significantly to the spread of Chinese culture and the development of overseas Chinese language education, which has won a well-established reputation overseas.
Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University has several teaching and supporting institutions including the Department of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the Department of Chinese Education, the Department of Chinese Language, the Department of Preparatory Studies, the Department of Training and the Experimental Center for Modern Education. It offers two academic master’s programs (Mandarin and Chinese Education and Linguistics and Applied Linguistics),one professional master’s program (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). There are 3 undergraduate programs including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Overseas Chinese Language Education and Chinese Language. It also provides a diploma program in Chinese Language. In addition to graduate,, undergraduate and diploma programs, the College offers non-academic programs and short-term Chinese language courses, professional qualification training classes for Chinese teachers, summer and winter camps for overseas students and preparatory programs for overseas Chinese students. More than 2,300 students are pursuing their studies in our school, including above 1,800 overseas students, respectively from Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, Mongolia, South Africa, Estonia, Ireland, Angola, Rwanda, Mauritius, South Korea, the United States, Italy, Madagascar, Peru, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China’s Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries and regions.
Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University has 131 faculty members. Among the 81 full-time teachers, 30 hold senior academic titles and 27 hold doctoral degrees. The faculty actively participates in teaching reform and scientific research. They have undertaken more than 200 research projects, published more than 1,000 academic papers and nearly 40 academic monographs and edited more than 30 textbooks since 1997. The College has organized various international workshops and seminar such as the “International Conference on Chinese Language Education”, “International Conference on Chinese Language Education and Literature”, “Huaqiao University World Chinese Education Forum (Hong Kong)”, “The 2nd Chinese College Preparatory Education Seminar”, “The 3rd Cross-strait Chinese Language Teachers Forum”, “The 5th World Chinese Teaching Graduate Students Forum”, “The 1st International Seminar on Chinese Language Teaching” and “World Chinese Education Development Seminar”. In addition, the College maintains close relations with dozens of overseas Chinese education institutions and schools and is active in cultural and academic exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries.
Chinese Language and Culture College of Huaqiao University has been actively improving its educational conditions. It now has advanced teaching facilities and convenient living facilities including computer rooms, multimedia digital voice laboratories, multimedia classrooms and microteaching classrooms. The library has a collection of more than 70,000 Chinese and foreign books and periodicals. Moreover, there is a wide range of sports facilities ranging from plastic track playground to basketball court, tennis court, football field, badminton court and others. Students can choose from2-6 bedded rooms with convenient facilities.
