The College of Engineering is under the direct administration of Huaqiao University and aims to serve the economic and social development of both sides of the Taiwan Straits. The College abides by the concept of high starting point, high standards and constant innovation and adheres to “upholding morality and faith; seeking truth and innovation”. Combining the advantageous intelligent manufacturing industry and the flourishing Internet of Things and Big Data industries on the west side of the Taiwan Straits, the College sets up three new engineering programs (Internet of Things Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering), one professional masters program (Electrical & Information Engineering) and one academic masters program (Information and Communication Engineering)

The College has the following teaching and research centers and platforms: Fujian Provincial Universities Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Industry Technology and System, Fujian Province Science and Technology Innovation Platform for Internet of Things and Cloud Computing, Fujian Province Virtual Simulation Experimental Center of the Internet of Things Technology, China Mobile (Fujian)-Huaqiao University Joint 5G Innovation Laboratory, Quanzhou Digital Research Institute, College of Internet of Things Industry and others. The laboratories cover an area of more than 2,000 square meters, with instruments and equipment worth more than 30 million yuan. The Internet of Things Engineering program has been rated as the characteristic program of the service programs provided by Fujian provincial universities in 2016 and as the pilot program of the innovation and entrepreneurship reform carried out by Fujian provincial universities in 2017. Two programs, including Internet of Things Engineering and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, have been evaluated as the first-caliber programs in Fujian Province.

The College has 36 teaching staff by the end of December 2021,including five professors, ten associate professors and 23 teachers with doctorate degrees (accounting for above 92%). 60% of the faculty are awarded associate senior titles and above. The 15 graduate supervisors are among the Outstanding Young Talents of Fujian Province “Young Eagle” Plan, Fujian Province “Million Engineers” Program, Fujian Province High-Level Talents Introduction Program and Quanzhou High-Level Talents Program. Some are laureates of Quanzhou Youth May Fourth Medal.

The College has obtained research funds of above 10 million yuan from the national, provincial and municipal governments to support various research projects, including one project supported by the National Key R&D Program of China, seven projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one project supported by the Fujian Province Science and Technology Major Project and 13 projects supported by the Natural Science Foundation of Fujian Province. The College actively promotes Industry-University-Research (IUR) and has received above 10 million yuan to support the projects jointly organized by the university and enterprises. Teachers and students have published 265 papers, among which above 150 papers are accepted by SCI/EI journals; 98 applied for patents and 29 inventions are patented; eight are evaluated as practical patents and 15 are awarded software copyright. The College has compiled and participated in compiling 11 textbooks (including chapters). The College has won one Gold Prize in the International Exhibition of Inventions, one Gold Prize in National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for Science and Technology Workers, two Second Prizes in Fujian Province Scientific and Technological Progress, two Second Prizes in Quanzhou Science and Technology Award and one Third Prize in the 7th Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award. The College has also completed eight projects to transform research results. The College attaches great importance to teaching, as reflected by its provincial teaching reform projects that have produced 20 undergraduate teaching reform projects, quality courses and model courses, one first-class course in Fujian Province and four first-class courses and premium online courses of Huaqiao University. The College has won two teaching achievement awards, compiled three textbooks and published 15 papers on teaching reform, simultaneously winning the Second Prize in the Fujian Province “University Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition” and Fujian Province “New Stars of University Teachers” Award.

Based on the industrial background of Quanzhou and both sides of the Taiwan Straits, the College of Engineering will accelerate its progress in introducing high-level talents and building teams, formulate overseas students’ training plans and attract and cultivate overseas students to serve the development and industrial needs of the newly emerged industries such as Internet of Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Optoelectronic Technologies. The design of the curriculum and teaching content will highlight the characteristics of engineering and focus on innovation, practice and application. The College will actively encourage the integration of production and teaching, the co-establishment of laboratories with enterprises and the construction of teaching and research bases in enterprises to carry out practical training and innovation activities. Capitalizing on the opportunity of construction of “double first-class” universities and adhering to the cooperative and joint innovation mode of the government, universities and enterprises, the College will strive to improve the quality of talent cultivation and education, build Huaqiao University as a bridgehead for local development, construct a first-class joint innovation platform for the cooperation between the government, university and enterprises, accelerate the building of a first-class, renowned and high-level university with distinctive characteristics.
